Man arrested for using AI in character assassination

Kathmandu, August 18 - Police have arrested Ramesh Bahadur Rawat, a 22-year-old resident of Khaptad Chhededaha Rural Municipality-5 in Bajura, for using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to engage in character assassination of prominent individuals.

According to Superintendent of Police Deepak Raj Awasthi from the Cyber Bureau, Rawat is accused of causing significant harm to the reputations of VIPs by misusing AI and other technologies. He allegedly created and distributed exaggerated and misleading audio-visual content.

Rawat was apprehended in Sindhupalchok on Friday. He faces charges under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063.

The district court in Kathmandu has extended the investigation period by five days as the case proceeds. The Cyber Bureau has noted a rise in character assassination of political leaders through the misuse of AI.

Recent findings reveal that such AI-generated content has been circulated on social media.

The Bureau has urged against such activities.
