Bangladesh PM resigns and flees country as protesters storm palace

Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman has announced that an interim government, with the participation of all parties, will be formed soon after Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina resigns from her post.

He said: “After holding a fruitful discussion with all political parties, we have decided to form an interim government. We will speak with President Mohammed Shahabuddin now to resolve the situation.”

He called for a halt to all violence in the name of protest and promised that the new government will ensure justice for all the deaths that took place during the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement.

Professor Asif Nazrul from the Law Department of Dhaka University has been asked to issue a statement to request that the student to call off the protest.

General Waker said Sheikh Hasina left the country after resigning from her post.

He said no members of the Awami League was present at the meeting with the political parties at the army headquarters.

'Historic moment' for Bangladesh - BBC Correspondent

A BBC correspondent in Dhaka describes today's events as a "historic moment" for Bangladesh.

"We have seen a mass upsurge in Bangladesh: tens of thousands of people took to the streets... and suddenly we received the news that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the official residence," reports BBC Bangla's Akbar Hossein from Bangladesh's capital.

Footage has now emerged showing protesters looting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official residence in the capital Dhaka.

Some of the demonstrators are seen carrying chairs and what looks like a sofa from the Ganabhaban residence.

Hasina is heading to the city of Agartala in India, BBC Bangla is reporting.

The prime minister - who has resigned - earlier left the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on a helicopter with her sister, according to reports.
