Thamel and Durbarmarg to operate 24 hours starting today

KATHMANDU: From today onwards, Thamel and Durbarmarg areas will be open round the clock, catering to visitors and locals alike at any hour of the day.

The District Administration Office Kathmandu has formulated a code of conduct and is set to implement the operation of these two prominent areas of the federal capital on a 24-hour basis.

This decision coincides with the first day of the year 2081 in the lunar calendar and has been made in accordance with the directives of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.

Jitendra Basnet, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, assured that robust security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of Thamel and Durbarmarg. Both areas have been equipped to accommodate night businesses seamlessly.

To facilitate transportation during nighttime hours, arrangements have been made for city buses, taxis, and ride-sharing apps. A 'Code of Conduct and Standards-2080' has been ratified to regulate full-time business operations in Thamel and Durbarmarg.

Bhabiswar Sharma, Chairperson of Thamel Tourism Development Council, emphasized that the initiative to keep the markets open 24 hours aims to foster sustainable economic growth in Thamel and Durbarmarg.

Sanjay Adhikari, Coordinator of Durbarmarg Development Board, expressed optimism that the decision to operate the markets round the clock would resonate positively at the international level.

A formal program, graced by the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Lamichhane, is scheduled for this afternoon to officially announce the commencement of 24-hour operations in Thamel and Durbarmarg.
