Govt lawyers pursue stricter penalties for cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane in rape case
KATHMANDU: In a legal maneuver, government lawyers have initiated proceedings in the Patan High Court, advocating for more severe repercussions against cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane amidst a rape accusation.
They contend that the verdict issued by the Kathmandu District Court fell short of their expectations. Initially, the Kathmandu District Court had sentenced Sandeep Lamichhane to eight years behind bars and imposed a fine of Rs 500,000 upon convicting him of rape.
However, government attorneys had insisted on a minimum jail term of 13 years, citing the victim's status as a minor.
Additionally, the petition urges for the reversal of the Kathmandu District Court's decision, arguing that it diverged from their demands and erroneously labeled the victim as an adult.
In parallel, Sandeep Lamichhane has launched his own plea for exoneration in the Patan High Court.
