International Workers' Day being celebrated today

KATHMANDU, May 1: Today is the 134th International Workers' Day. On the occasion of International Workers' Day, Nepal is celebrating with the slogan 'Social Security, Decent Labour: Respect for Labour, Nation's Campaign'. This day is being celebrated all over the country under the auspices of labor organizations of various political parties along with the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security.

This day is being celebrated in memory of the day when the slogan 'Eight hours of work, eight hours of entertainment, and eight hours of rest' was established. In 1886, while the workers were protesting, a bomb suddenly exploded in a place called Hay Market in Chicago, USA. Although it was not revealed who caused the bomb blast, the police started a massive crackdown on the protesting workers.

Seven laborers died during the protest due to the repression of the police. The police repression did not stop the movement but got even more extreme. Finally, the movement was successful and after that, the workers were made to work for only eight hours.

Then, in 1889, a joint meeting of world labor organizations and labor leaders was held in Paris, the capital of France. In that meeting, the meeting decided to celebrate World Workers' Day all over the world to commemorate the same day. After that, every year since 1890, Labor Day has been celebrated on May 1st of the English month.

The first labor movement took place in 2007 B.S. in Biratnagar, Nepal. With the political change of 2046 B.S., a public holiday has been given in Nepal on the occasion of this day.
