KATHMANDU, March 7: In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court of Nepal had declared the citizenship of Rabi Lamichhane to be illegal, and scrapped his parliamentary post.

Lamichhane, who is the Chairman of Rastriya Swatantra Party and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, was accused by advocates Rabi Raj Basaula and Yubaraj Poudel of using both Nepalese and American citizenship and passport simultaneously, without relinquishing his Nepalese citizenship.

The petitioners had demanded that Lamichhane's membership in the House of Representatives (HoR) be scrapped.
The constitutional bench, headed by Chief Justice Harikrishna Karki, ruled in favor of the petitioners, leading to the cancellation of Lamichhane's parliamentary post. Lamichhane was elected as a member of the HoR from Chitwan-2.
