Sonam Lhosar's glamour in Capital (with pictures)
KATHMANDU, Jan. 22: Today the Tamang community celebrated Sonam Lhosar in a grand manner. The Tamang community celebrated Sonam Lhosar in various places across the country including the capital Kathmandu. It is customary for the community to celebrate this festival on the day of Magh Shukla Pratipada of every New Year, the day after the new moon. Along with the Tamang living in different parts of the country, Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, Lepcha, etc. have been celebrating this festival according to their own style and tradition.
The Year of the Tiger has ended and the Year of the Rabbit has started today. Sonam Lhosar has been divided into 12 classes: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon (cloud), Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and Pig. This festival is specially celebrated in different districts of Bagmati province where there is a majority of the Tamang caste. On the occasion of Sonam Lhosar, the government has declared a public holiday across the country today.
