KPKS Model UN: Preparing Youths for Sustainable Future
Kathmandu, Jan. 7: KPKS Model UN 2023 was organized over three days starting on January 4 by Kathmandu Pragya Kunja School (KPKS). "Preparing Youths for The Sustainable Future" was the key contextual theme. The three-day conference, which was organized by KPKS in partnership with Lumbini Asia International Model United Nations(LAIMUN) Society, was officially opened by AyshanieMedagangoda-Labè, Resident Representative, UNDP Nepal, and the closing ceremony was honoured by Yubanath Lamsal, former Nepal ambassador to Denmark. The special guest, Lamsal congratulated the school and students for the successful completion of the Model UN conference and shed light on the significance of the 3C`s i.e. Critical Thinking, Connectivity, and Collaboration among people, societies and nations so that we materialize our global objective of peace, prosperity and development.
The closing ceremony featured a school orchestra performance mixed with the traditional Newari Dance in front of more than 100 attendees. The program witnessed crucial discussions about the global objectives established by the five major UN committees: The Economic and Finance Affairs Council (EFAC), the Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), and the World Health Organization (WHO). (The discussions and resolutions on the Great Pacific Patch in the UNEP, Freedom of Speech through the UNHRC, and the World Obesity Problem in the WHO were the main takeaways."We have made an effort to coordinate international solutions to international issues while keeping in mind the need to take actions locally”, shared Adwait Thapa, General Secretary of this program.
Addressing the session, Kapil Dev Regmi, the board of directors highlighted the need for collaborative actions from homes, schools, and communities against deteriorating health habits, environmental threats, and humanitarian crises.
The school principal, Sunita Poudel, addressed the attendees and participants at the closing ceremony and explained, "Model United Nations is an academic simulation program where learners examine the concept and context of diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. KPKS MUN aims to give students a platform to develop their abilities so they can become better people in the future."
12 students of International Relations from the University of Mary Washington, USA observed the committee discussion and also took part in the general assembly. The program ended with a certification and award distribution ceremony.
