Brazilian prison has 2nd riot at beginning of 2018

RIO DE JANEIRO,  Inmates of a low-security prison in midwestern Brazil carried out a riot on Thursday, the second riot in the prison at the beginning of this year, local authorities said.
According to the authorities, one inmate managed to escape and has yet to be recaptured. No one has been made hostage and so far, there are no reports of casualties.
The prison, situated in Aparecida de Goiania, the second largest city in Brazil's central state of Goias, is currently under siege. The first riot occurred on New Year's Day, causing nine deaths and 14 injures. This time, the police reportedly managed to get the situation under control before any killings.
After the first riot, the Supreme Court ordered an inspection at the prison, which uncovered several irregularities, including significant overcrowding. The Brazilian prison system is known for being severely overcrowded and often not offering basic living conditions to inmates.
The two riots occurred one year after a series of prison riots in northern Brazil which evidenced the dire conditions of the Brazilian prison system. In January 2017, 100 inmates were killed in riots.Enditem
