BIRATNAGAR, Jan 26: Gopal Basnet, one of the three candidates fielded jointly by the five-party ruling alliance, has been elected a member of the National Assembly (NA) from Province 1 by a lucky draw.

Nepali Congress candidate Basnet and Guru Baral of CPN-UML secured the same vote weightage of 4,488 votes in the election held on Wednesday.

As the vote count was indecisive, the authorities decided to elect a candidate through a lucky draw as per Article 58 of the National Assembly Election Act-2017.

Sonam Gyalzen Sherpa, a candidate of the main opposition UML and Jayanti Rai, a candidate of CPN (Unified Socialist) from the ruling alliance also secured their seats in the upper house for the next six years.
