Nepal ranked 117 in Corruption Perception Index, South Sudan at bottom of table

KATHMANDU, Jan 25: A report of Transparency International (TI) has shown that Nepal is among the countries with the highest corruption rate.

Of 180 countries, Nepal falls in the 117 positions with the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI)  of 33 points. 

The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks countries around the world, based on how corrupt their public sectors are perceived to be. The results are given on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.

According to the report, countries like Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand are the cleanest countries with less corruption. 

 While Denmark scored 88 CPI, South Sudan, the country with the highest level of corruption, scored only 11 in 2021. 

In South Asia, Bhutan ranked in the 25th position with 68 points, India and Maldives both at 85th position with 40 points, Sri Lanka at 102th  with 37 points and Pakistan at 140th position with 28 points. 

Bangladesh stands at 146th position with 26 points and Afghanistan, the most corrupt country in South Asia is at 174th position with a CPI score of only 16 points. 

Nepal’s northern neighbor China ranks in 66th position with 45 points, according to the report.
