Dates for elections will be announced after amending the law: NC’s Deputy President Khadka

KATHMANDU, Jan 24: Deputy President of Nepali Congress (NC), Purna Bahadur Khadka has maintained that the date of elections will be announced after the amendment of the law.

According to Khadka, the government has been unable to announce dates for the election as the Constitution of Nepal and the Local Level Election Act, 2017 are conflicting. “The government is doing homework in this regard,” he told Ratopati.

Khadka, who had also attended the meeting of the ruling alliance held earlier, said that the government has been advised to make necessary amendments in the law. “The dates for the election will be announced once the government is done with the amendment of the law.”

According to Khadka, in Article 225 of the Constitution of Nepal, there is a provision to hold an election by six months after the tenure of the local government has expired. But in clause 3 of the Local Level Election Act, it is stated that such election shall be held prior to two months of the expiry of a Village Assembly and of a Municipal Assembly. “So this conflicting law should be amended,” Khadka added.
