Deuba, Prachanda meet, agree to hold local elections in April
KATHMANDU, Jan 17: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ held a meeting at the official residence of the prime minister in Baluwatar on Monday.
The two leaders discussed local level elections during the meeting held three days after the Election Commission (EC) urged the government to announce the poll date at the earliest.
According to Ramesh Malla, personal aide to Chair Prachanda, two leaders agreed to hold elections for three tiers of governments as per the constitutional provision.
The leaders also agreed to call a meeting of the high-level political mechanism for Tuesday morning and announce the election date as per the latter’s recommendations.
The tenure of local level people’s representatives is due to expire on May 19.
