What led to the brutal killing of policewoman at Letang?

KATHMANDU, March 21: Just in the past one month, as many as three heinous and cruel criminal activities occurred in Letang and Sundar Haraicha Municipality of Morang district. Earlier on February 23, a minor was raped and murdered. Sixteen days after the incident, an 18 months old child was raped and murdered. Likewise, on Sunday, a policewoman was killed while she was on duty.

Police have already arrested those involved in raping of minors and the further investigation and legal procedings are underway.

However, a police woman, who was sent along with her team to arrest a teacher accused of sexual abuse on his student, has been killed while she was on her duty.

The locals and students of the school had staged protests and clashed with security personnel.

Earlier, demanding death sentence for those raping and mudering an 18 months child, the locals had tried to stage a similar protest. More than 12 people were arrested and few vehicles were lit and vandalized.

The locals and students had also staged similar protests after the incident of February 23. The public was brought under control by the police, local leaders and teachers promising them strict actions against those found involved.

However, the people of Letang and Sundar Haraicha Municipality went off the deep end on Sunday. “People’s representatives, teachers and leaders were beaten. They had decided to take action against those involved by themselves. It was not possible as per the rule of law. Many were injured,” said Shankar Rai, Mayor of Letang Municipality.

It has been learnt that the locals and students demanded death sentences against those found involved in such incidents. But, as per the Constitution of Nepal, those involved in murder and other cruel crimes are sentenced for life imprisonment.

According to Somraj Thapa, INSEC’s Province 1 coordinator, the general public of the province are terrified and outraged in recent days due to growing number of crimes like rape and murder. “These incidents seem to have triggered psychological and emotional effects in people, '' he said.
