World Cup Semi-Finals: Argentina vs England History

An attempt has been made here to delve into the history of semi-final journeys and successes between Argentina and England. This is the first time these two teams will face each other in the World Cup semi-finals. However, these two teams have competed against each other in other stages of the World Cup.

This is the sixth time Argentina has reached the semi-finals of the Football World Cup. Earlier, Argentina played World Cup semi-final matches in 1930, 1986, 1990, 2014, and 2022.

Argentina has remained undefeated in all five of these matches. In 1930, Argentina faced Uruguay in the World Cup semi-finals, in which Uruguay was defeated by a score of 6-1.

In 2014, Argentina and Netherlands clashed in the semi-finals. After the regular time ended in a goalless draw, Argentina won 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

In 2022, Argentina achieved a 3-0 victory in the World Cup semi-finals.

Argentina, which has maintained a 100% success rate in the semi-finals so far, will face England in the 2026 semi-finals.

England's record in the semi-finals, however, is not as good. England has managed to reach the World Cup semi-finals four times so far.

Argentina first won the World Cup title in 1978. However, there were no semi-final stages in that edition. The tournament was organized with the top two teams from the second group stage playing in the final. Therefore, the matches of that year have not been included in the semi-final stage.

England has secured a win in only one of the three semi-finals it has played before.

England has played in the World Cup semi-finals in 1966, 1990, and 2018. It has won only in 1966.

In the 1966 semi-finals, England defeated Portugal 2-1. Similarly, in 1990, England competed against West Germany in the semi-finals, which ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time. West Germany won 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

In the 2018 semi-finals, England lost to Croatia 2-1.
