Activist Majid Ansari Alleges Illegal Detention and Torture by Police, Seeks Protection

Kathmandu. Climate activist Majid Ansari has demanded protection for his life, alleging that the police illegally detained and beat him. Ansari was arrested by the police from Kirtipur on Saturday. 

Ansari, who was injured during the arrest, is currently undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Writing on social media from the hospital on Monday, Ansari stated that around 5 PM on Saturday, Asar 27, 10-12 police personnel dragged him, beat him, and seriously injured him, and that he is currently receiving treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. 

"I have not been informed about the reason for my arrest so far, nor have I been shown any arrest warrant," Ansari wrote, "There is no clarity about the legal status of my arrest either." 

He has urged the Home Minister or the Chief of Police to clarify his arrest and questioned why illegal actions are being targeted against him. "Therefore, I request all concerned authorities, all honorable members of the Federal Parliament, the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives, civil society, international human rights communities, and all human rights defenders to ensure the security of my life and liberty," Ansari demands.
