Egypt FA Files Complaint Against Referees in World Cup Qualifier Against Argentina

Kathmandu. The Egypt Football Association has filed a complaint with the International Football Federation (FIFA) claiming serious errors by the referee team in the World Cup Football 2026 Round of 16 match against Argentina.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the association stated that it has demanded an investigation into French referee François Letexier and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team and their removal from the competition.

Egypt was eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Argentina 3-2. According to the Egypt Football Association, a goal scored by Mostafa Zico was disallowed after VAR's recommendation when the team was leading 1-0. The referee changed the decision, citing a foul on Argentina's Lisandro Martinez before the goal.

Egypt claims that they should have been awarded a penalty, stating that Alexis Mac Allister fouled Hamdi Fathi before Enzo Fernandez's decisive goal.

The association alleged that some video footage was refused for review, which would have confirmed their team's claim for a valid goal and penalty.

Egypt's coach Hossam Hassan also expressed dissatisfaction with the referee's decision after the match, commenting that his team had suffered injustice.
