OpenAI Unveils Custom AI Chip 'Jalapeno'

New York. Artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI on Wednesday unveiled its first custom AI chip ‘Jalapeno’. The company stated that it has been developed to operate ChatGPT and other AI services faster, more effectively, and with less energy consumption. 

This chip has been prepared in collaboration with domestic chip manufacturing company Broadcom. According to OpenAI, Jalapeno is specifically designed to meet the computing requirements of ChatGPT and its coding assistant Codex. It is also claimed that it can handle the workload of advanced AI systems that will come in the future. 

The company stated through its blog that in initial testing, Jalapeno has shown significantly better performance in terms of energy consumption per watt compared to currently available state-of-the-art chips. OpenAI and Broadcom had announced a plan last year to develop custom chips to operate 10 gigawatts of AI computing infrastructure. On Wednesday, the first chip developed from that partnership was unveiled. 

Currently, major technology companies active in the AI field are being attracted towards developing their own chips. Google and Amazon are also developing their own AI chips. 

This helps companies customize hardware according to their AI models and reduce dependence on chip manufacturers like Nvidia. OpenAI has stated that Jalapeno is not for general purposes but is specially made for modern large language models.
