Government Completes Slum Eviction in Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu. The government's work to remove slum settlements on the banks of various rivers and public lands in the Kathmandu Valley, which began on April 12, has been completed for the Kathmandu Valley.

In this process, disorganized settlements in areas like Manohara, Gairigaun, Balkhu, Teku, Balaju have been removed. The areas where settlements were removed now appear completely open and empty. The appearance of these areas has also changed after the riverbanks and public use lands, which were encroached upon for years, were cleared.

Prioritizing the conservation of the Bagmati and its tributary rivers, environmental improvement, and urban management, the concerned bodies have been advancing various works for the conservation and management of the cleared areas.

The Empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, Kathmandu Valley Development Authority, and Kathmandu Metropolitan City are jointly conducting necessary structural constructions and monitoring activities with the objective of conserving the cleared areas, promoting greenery, managing riverbanks, and preventing re-encroachment.

For the long-term conservation of riverbanks and public lands, programs such as fencing, tree plantation, footpath construction, beautification, and regular monitoring have been implemented. Additionally, security and monitoring systems have been tightened to prevent illegal settlements from re-emerging in the cleared areas.

Government bodies have stated that they will continue the campaign with the objective of conserving the river system, maintaining environmental balance, and ensuring the proper utilization of public property. Concerned bodies are actively working with the goal of bringing the cleared areas into organized public use and improving the urban environment of the valley.
