Banke Prison Urged to Transform into Correctional Facility

Banke. It has been urged to transform the prison in Naubasta, Banke, into a correctional facility.

The report prepared after the monitoring conducted by a joint team of Advocacy Forum Nepal and Nepalgunj High Bar Association has pointed out this. A few days ago, in coordination with the Nepalgunj High Bar, Advocacy Forum Nepal conducted a site visit of the Prison Office Naubasta, Banke.

The report includes a study of the clashes between inmates inside the prison on Jestha 16 and the subsequent situation, as well as information collected about the complaints, problems of the inmates, and their access to justice, informed Basanta Gautam, Lumbini Province Coordinator of Advocacy Forum Nepal.

On Jestha 16, facts were gathered from various parties to understand the situation of the incident and legal consultation was provided to the inmates. The prison has a total of 730 male inmates along with two dependent children.

In the detailed description of inmates based on cases, there are 224 for rape, 183 for drug offenses, 153 for murder, 27 for theft, 22 for kidnapping and public offense, 18 for various offenses, 16 for dacoity and theft, 16 for various industry cases, 11 for vehicle-related deaths, seven for attempted murder, and two for arms and ammunition.

A total of 32 Indian citizens are serving their sentences or are under investigation in the Naubasta prison, of whom one is in custody while 31 have had their cases decided and are serving their sentences.

According to the case details of foreign nationals, there are 17 for drug offenses, five for theft and dacoity, three for attempted murder, two for rape, two for murder, and one for other various offenses.
