Nepali Congress Leader Prakash Sharan Mahat Expresses Concern Over Party's Declining Popularity and Internal Issues

Kathmandu. Nepali Congress leader Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has expressed concern over the decline in the party's popular support after the elections and the psychological despair among party workers across the country. Dr. Mahat stated that the leadership must take special initiative to prevent the party, which is in a challenging time, from weakening further.

Stating that broader unity is necessary to stop the growing inactivity and exodus within the party, Dr. Mahat questioned the impartiality of the 15th General Convention. “There is no basis to believe the leadership when they say they will conduct it impartially,” Dr. Mahat said, “Therefore, a common mechanism must be formed to complete the 15th General Convention, amend the constitution, and finalize the active membership. We are not seeking positions or shares, only a guarantee of impartiality.”

Commenting on the confusion seen in the process of digitizing the renewal of active membership, Dr. Mahat said that the center cannot escape by blaming the districts and wards. “We have no objection to digitizing, but it is the center’s job to automatically digitize the details of those who have already renewed,” he said, “If it is not updated, it is not acceptable to say that they will have to get off the vehicle or we will drag them out. The data is in the district, the center must manage it.”

Dr. Mahat argues that the current leadership, which came through a special convention, should not undertake far-reaching tasks such as decisions of sister organizations and constitutional amendments. He stated that such tasks should only be carried out by the new leadership elected from the 15th General Convention.

Dr. Mahat has put forward two main agendas: the center must undertake the work of digital updating to strengthen the party, and a common mechanism must be formed to make the upcoming general convention free from disputes.”
