Sagarmatha Day Celebrated with Programs

Kathmandu. Various programs have been organized today on the occasion of 'Sagarmatha Day', celebrated in memory of the first successful ascent of the world's highest peak, Sagarmatha. A program jointly organized by the Nepal Tourism Board and concerned stakeholders started with a morning procession from the Employees Provident Fund premises and concluded with a formal program at the Nachghar in Jamal. The program was attended by the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Khadak Raj Poudel, as the chief guest. Various distinguished personalities who have contributed to Sagarmatha climbing, tourism, and mountain conservation were honored and felicitated at the program.

Sagarmatha Day is celebrated every year on May 29. On this day in 1953, New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made the first successful ascent of Sagarmatha. Since then, this day has been celebrated with special significance in Nepal. Photo: Nepal Photo Library
