Vishnumaya Bishwakarma Becomes First Dalit Woman MP from Tehrathum

Vishnumaya Bishwakarma once worked as a teacher in a private school in Tehrathum. After working in the teaching profession for 6 years, she later fully immersed herself in the politics of CPN (UML). However, she never thought she would become a Member of Parliament.

Vishnumaya, who served as a district committee member of UML Tehrathum and deputy secretary of the All Nepal Women's Association district committee, became a proportional representative MP from the Dalit women's quota of UML. She is a committed and dynamic woman in politics. In 2063 BS, she became a Koshi Zonal Committee member and a central committee member of the All Nepal Women's Association.

Currently the UML Tehrathum district in-charge, she was elected to the central committee from the 10th and 11th National General Conventions of UML.

Vishnumaya has pledged to raise her voice for the rights and entitlements of Dalits in Parliament. "I will take initiative on how Dalits can be uplifted," she told Ratopati.

Having been involved in politics since her student days, she obtained her UML party membership as a national council member of All Nepal National Free Student Union. She is a woman who has succeeded in reaching the central committee by working in various levels of UML structures from the grassroots committees.

When asked by Ratopati, "Why did you become an MP?" she replied, "For social transformation. Especially for the upliftment and liberation of the Dalit community, I will fight."

The Dalit community is at the lowest strata of this society. In her understanding, the marginalized class in all aspects is the Dalit community, facing poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. She states that she will continue to fight for the upliftment of that oppressed class.

Vishnumaya is the only Dalit MP in the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives. She clarified that she will continuously raise her voice for the rights and entitlements of Dalits and play a role in enacting laws in favor of Dalits.

She stated that she will continuously strive to uplift the political, social, and economic status of the Dalit community.

She has promised to fulfill her commitments regarding the security of rights, education, health, and employment for the Dalit communities. She mentions that she is visiting every ministry daily to fulfill those commitments.
