Weather Forecast: Extreme Heat in Tarai, Thunderstorms in Hills

Kathmandu. According to the weather forecast issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology for Tuesday, extreme temperatures are expected to rise in the Terai regions of Sudurpashchim and Lumbini provinces. While sweltering heat increases in the Terai districts, thunderstorms and lightning are forecast in the hilly and mountainous cities of the country.

The temperature in Dhangadhi, Sudurpashchim Province, is estimated to reach as high as 40 to 42 degrees Celsius today afternoon. Other Terai cities in Sudurpashchim and Lumbini provinces have also been classified as 'hot days' for today. Nepalgunj and Bhairahawa will have a maximum temperature of 39 to 41 degrees Celsius.

Similarly, Dipayal will reach 37 to 39 degrees Celsius and Birendranagar will reach 36 to 38 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Ghorahi, Dang will be between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius, and in Janakpur, Madhesh Province, it will be between 34 to 36 degrees Celsius. There is no possibility of rain in these extremely hot cities, and the weather will be mostly clear at night.

While it is extremely hot in the Terai, thunderstorms and lightning will occur in various hilly areas including the Kathmandu Valley. Moderate thunderstorms and lightning are forecast for Pokhara, Kathmandu, Okhaldhunga, Dhankuta, Jiri, and Taplejung this afternoon. There is a 40 percent chance of rain in these cities. Similarly, light rain with thunderstorms will occur in Jumla, Biratnagar, Jomsom, and Dharan. In Simara, Madhesh Province, although the maximum temperature will be between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius, there is a 20 percent chance of light rain.

The rain will continue in some hilly areas even at night. Pokhara will experience moderate rain with thunderstorms at night, while Kathmandu, Okhaldhunga, Dhankuta, Jomsom, and Taplejung will have light rain. Partial clouds are forecast for the night in cities like Dadeldhura, Ghorahi, Janakpur, Jiri, Dharan, and Biratnagar.

Although the night temperature will decrease in the Terai cities, the feeling of heat will persist. The minimum temperature in Dhangadhi and Nepalgunj will remain between 27 to 29 degrees Celsius even at night.
