Kathmandu Metropolitan City Seeks Sustainable Waste Management Ideas

Kathmandu. Kathmandu Metropolitan City has sought 'ideas' to make the city's waste management sustainable and scientific. 

The Environment Management Department of the Metropolitan City issued a public notice on Thursday inviting proposals from interested individuals, associations, organizations, and companies for scientifically managing compostable waste.

'Waste to Energy' and 'Zero Waste' Goals

The Metropolitan City, through its annual policy and program for the upcoming fiscal year 2082/083, has put forward the concept of sorting waste at the source, 'Waste to Energy' (energy from waste), and 'Zero Waste' city.

To achieve this goal, the metropolis is seeking to scientifically manage compostable waste by using it as a resource instead of dumping it on the streets.

The main objective of this step is to reduce the burden of waste being disposed of at the landfill site, the metropolis stated. The metropolis believes that scientifically managing compostable waste will protect the environment and also support the 'circular economy'.

Conditions and Criteria

The metropolis has set some specific criteria for the methods recommended for management. These include being technologically advanced and odor-free.

It should be environmentally friendly and contribute to social development. It should be in accordance with the standards approved by the Government of Nepal.

It should be technically and commercially feasible.

Reduce the burden on the landfill site.
