Nepal Reiterates Commitment to Safe, Orderly Migration at UN Forum

Kathmandu. Nepal's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Lok Bahadur Thapa, has stated that Nepal is committed to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration.

Speaking at the debate of the Second Global Review Forum on Migration at the United Nations Headquarters today, he emphasized safe and orderly migration, stating that as a major labor-supplying nation, Nepal is firm in its stance for safe and dignified migration.

According to Nepal's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Ambassador Thapa mentioned that approximately 4 million Nepali migrant workers contribute significantly to the economies of the countries where they work and to Nepal's development. He stated that migrant Nepalis play a remarkable role in Nepal's economic and social development through remittances, skills, and knowledge transfer.

He informed that Nepal has been advancing various reform initiatives in areas such as the recruitment system, gender-responsive migration policy, skills development, control of human trafficking, social security arrangements through the Social Security Fund and Foreign Employment Welfare Fund, and the digitalization of recruitment services.

Ambassador Thapa highlighted the existing challenges such as irregular migration, human trafficking, labor exploitation, and lack of coordination, emphasizing the need for international cooperation and shared responsibility to address these issues.
