Lalitpur Mayor Highlights Programs for Senior Citizens

Lalitpur. Lalitpur Metropolitan City Chief Chiribabu Maharjan has stated that the metropolis has been conducting various creative and effective programs for the respect and welfare of senior citizens.

Addressing the 'International Symposium' organized in memory of former Prime Minister Manmohan Adhikari, Chief Maharjan mentioned that he has given high priority to the dignity and health of senior citizens during his tenure.

Chief Maharjan recalled that he organized the chariot procession for the living literary centenarian Satya Mohan Joshi, published coins and postage stamps in his name, and managed security and transportation, stating that these actions were the starting point for respecting senior citizens.

Similarly, the metropolis recently completed the fifth 'Janku' (chariot procession) of 105-year-old Manomaya Maharjan. Highlighting other welfare schemes run by the metropolis for senior citizens, he informed that an annual festival allowance of ten thousand rupees is being provided.

Chief Maharjan said, 'Perhaps for the first time in the history of Nepal, the metropolis has managed the fifth Janku. This reflects our culture and reverence for senior citizens. Just as Manmohan Adhikari started the social security allowance with one hundred rupees during his tenure, we have been providing ten thousand rupees annually as Dashain-Tihar allowance to senior citizens.'

In terms of health, Maharjan said that the metropolis has started providing free pneumonia vaccine targeting senior citizens aged 68 and above.

He claimed that although the pneumonia vaccine is expensive, this campaign is progressing effectively for the health security of senior citizens.

In addition, he mentioned that a special gallery is being arranged as a special guest for senior citizens who have undergone Janku for observing the famous Bhoto Jatra held in Jawalakhel. - News Agency Nepal
