Farmers in Kailali Happy as Wheat Sells Above Government Support Price

Kailali. Farmers in Kailali are happy to be able to sell wheat above the government-set support price. The Food Management and Trade Company Limited, Provincial Office Dhangadhi, started purchasing wheat in Tikapur, Kailali from Wednesday.

The company started purchasing wheat from farmers and agriculture-related cooperatives in Tikapur, Kailali from Wednesday. Prior to this, wheat purchase had also started from Mohanpur in Dhangadhi from Tuesday.

Senior Assistant of the Provincial Office Dhangadhi, Pushparaj Bajgai, informed that wheat is being purchased at a price higher than the minimum support price set by the government.

"The minimum support price for wheat set by the government is Rs 3,945 per quintal. The Food Company is purchasing wheat at Rs 4,250 per quintal with the objective of encouraging farmers," he said, adding, "Farmers are happy to get a higher price."

Farmers are happy to sell wheat at a price higher than the support price. Yogendra Saud, who went to the food godown in Tikapur to sell wheat, said that he received a higher price by selling wheat to the Food Company compared to other places.

"Some farmers have already sold their wheat at a lower price," he said, "but we got a good price."

Krimlal Dangora from Mahadeva, Joshi Rural Municipality-6, is also happy to be able to sell wheat to the Food Company. "We got a price higher than what was set," he said, "The government should set the price and start the purchase process on time."

Since some farmers in the village have already sold their wheat, he suggests starting the purchase process on time in the coming days. Another farmer, Ramesh Chaudhary, said that he has already sold wheat from his farm as the produce from the field has to be used to buy notebooks and books for the children. Farmers here sell produce from their fields to manage household expenses, and to buy seeds and fertilizers for the rainy season cultivation. He stated that the government should make all its future actions beneficial to the farmers.

The Food Company has a target of purchasing 10,000 quintals of wheat from Kailali. The Food Company plans to purchase a maximum of 70 quintals from each farmer and a maximum of 500 quintals per cooperative from agriculture-related cooperatives. Additionally, cooperatives involved in seed multiplication in this region also purchase wheat from farmers at prices higher than the support price. Receiving a price higher than the set rate has encouraged farmers to engage in agricultural work.
