Government Clears Squatter Settlements in Kathmandu; Bhaktapur Evictions Set for Sunday

Kathmandu. The government peacefully cleared squatter settlements in Thapathali and Gairigaun within the Kathmandu Metropolitan City today, Saturday.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway to clear the settlement in the Manohara area of Bhaktapur using bulldozers starting tomorrow, Sunday.

According to Superintendent of Police Surya Bahadur Khadka of the District Police Range, Bhaktapur, approximately 80 percent of the residents living in structures along the riverbank in the Manohara area have already vacated the settlement with their belongings. The remaining families are continuing to move their possessions.

More than 1,600 people had been residing in 777 huts in this settlement.

The government has not yet deployed bulldozers in the Manohara area of Bhaktapur. However, as residents continue to move their belongings, most of the huts have already been vacated. Superintendent of Police Khadka stated that the government is prepared to fully clear the settlement using bulldozers starting tomorrow, Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City reported that there was no resistance during the clearing of the squatter settlements in Thapathali and Gairigaun today. The metropolis stated that the settlements were cleared peacefully and the squatters have been relocated to various holding centers.
