International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace Observed Globally

Kathmandu. The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is being observed today across various countries worldwide with diverse programs. This day has been celebrated since 2019 at the call of the United Nations.

While multilateralism refers to cooperation between at least three or more nations, its essence is considered to lie not just in numbers, but in a collective political commitment based on shared values, principles, and rules.

According to the United Nations, consultation, inclusivity, and solidarity are its fundamental principles. It ensures sustainable and effective cooperation based on equal rights and responsibilities.

As multilateralism is both a method of organization and cooperation within the international system, its importance has grown even further in today's interdependent world.

The United Nations, with 193 member states and over 1,000 non-governmental organizations and international organizations as observers, is recognized as the primary forum for multilateralism. Established in 1945, the main objective of this global body is to maintain international peace and security. Its charter expresses a commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means and protecting future generations from the scourge of war. Emphasis has been placed on conflict prevention and resolution through diplomatic efforts.

In the 'Summit of the Future' held in September 2024, world leaders adopted the 'Pact for the Future,' reaffirming their commitment to peace, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights.
