CPN-UML Lawmaker Mahar Calls for Clear State Vision on Private Sector

Kathmandu. CPN-UML lawmaker Ain Mahar has emphasized that the state must clarify its perspective and vision regarding the private sector, describing it as the backbone of the nation. Speaking at an event in the capital, Mahar stated that the state's understanding and approach are more critical than policy itself.

He criticized the state's inconsistent behavior, noting that it often oscillates between embracing the private sector and treating it like an enemy. He argued that the tendency to view businesspeople merely as 'brokers' or 'commission agents' must end. Discussing the tax system, Mahar expressed his agreement with the private sector's demand to expand the tax base rather than increasing tax rates.

Mahar also noted that the private sector itself must be responsible for making businesses reputable. He urged a shift from import-oriented to export-oriented businesses to reduce the country's alarming trade deficit, suggesting that large investors should be attracted specifically to agriculture and tourism.

Citing his home district of Bajhang, he highlighted the immense potential for walnut and timur farming. He also proposed plans to benefit significantly from tourism by developing the Taklakot border point, which serves as a gateway to Khaptad and Mansarovar. He pledged that he and his party would stand firmly to make the private sector a strong foundation of the economy.
