Two Ambassadors Recalled to Ministry Prepare to Resign

Kathmandu. Following the recall of six ambassadors by the Balendra (Balen) Shah-led government, two ambassadors previously summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are preparing to resign.

The former government led by Sushila Karki had decided to recall ambassadors from 11 countries. Challenging the decision on the grounds that their terms had not yet expired, the ambassadors filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court issued an interim order directing the government to allow them to continue their duties. Subsequently, the government summoned them to the ministry to work.

After the recalled ambassadors began drawing salaries and benefits while reporting to the ministry, they faced public criticism. Following this, nine out of the 11 ambassadors have already resigned. Nepali Ambassador to Germany Dr. Shail Rupakheti and Nepali Ambassador to Spain Shanil Nepal have been reporting to the ministry, but sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicate they are now preparing to resign.

The Cabinet meeting held on Ashoj 30 had decided to recall ambassadors from 11 countries. The government had ordered them to return to Nepal by Kartik 20, which led to the filing of the writ petition. Hearing the petition, the Supreme Court issued an interim order on Kartik 16, directing the government not to implement the decision.

The following day, on the 17th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent another letter recalling the ambassadors to work at the ministry. Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are currently serving as acting heads in place of the recalled ambassadors.

The Balen-led government has recalled six ambassadors. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri stated that the ministry sent a directive letter on Monday instructing them to return to Nepal within one month. It is reported that senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will automatically become acting heads in those missions once the ambassadors return.
