Another prisoner dies of cancer in Bharatpur
Ratnanagar (Chitwan)- A prisoner convicted of murder and serving at the Bharatpur – based district prison has died of breast cancer.
42 – year – old Ambika Kamat died of breast cancer, said District Prison Chitwan's Jailer, Kamal Kafle. She was taken to cancer hospital and later transferred to Bharatpur hospital where she breathed her last.
She was serving a 20 – year sentence for murder. Kamat, who was transferred to Chitwan from Papla a year ago, had already served eight years.
On July 28, prisoner Sitaram BK, 47, of Handikhola of Makawanpur died of liver cancer at the same prison. In March, prisoners Arjun Giri, 35, of Sindhuli and Thagraj Poudel of Rupandehi had died of cancer.
There are still three more cancer patients at the Bharatpur prison. The prison has 569 inmates crammed into the narrow cells. This is triple the capacity the jail infrastructure can hold, which is causing significant problems for the inmates.
