CPN-UML Calls Emergency Meeting After Chairman KP Sharma Oli's Arrest; Announces Protests

Kathmandu. The CPN-UML has called an emergency meeting following the arrest of Chairman KP Sharma Oli. Secretary Mahesh Basnet informed that the Secretariat meeting is scheduled for 8:30 AM. He also stated that the meeting will announce protest programs.

“Not having political prisoners is considered an important indicator of democracy. Nepal was previously considered a good example of a country without political prisoners. But recent developments have increased concern about the country's political situation,” Basnet said.

He also stated that the appointment of inexperienced, anarchic, and controversial individuals like Sudhan Gurung as Home Minister by the Balen government, and the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, have created a situation where conflict in the country is likely to increase.

“Such activities reflect political vendetta and prejudice,” Basnet wrote on social media following the arrest of Oli and Lekhak.

He also expressed sadness at seeing police, who are unable to protect government property and assets and cannot even secure their own posts, deployed in thousands to arrest leaders who fought for the attainment of democracy.

“Let us participate in the demonstrations starting today from the UML side to save the country from politics of revenge and to protect democratic values and norms,” Basnet appealed, “Detailed information about the program will be provided after the Secretariat meeting scheduled for 8:30 AM today.”
