Chennai Super Kings Sign Spencer Johnson as Nathan Ellis's Replacement for IPL 2026

Chennai. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson to replace the injured Nathan Ellis for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Ellis was ruled out of the tournament after his hamstring injury flared up during the final match of the domestic one-day cup.

Chennai acquired Johnson for 15 million Indian Rupees. However, Johnson will only join the team around April 21 to 23 as he recovers from a back injury.

Due to Johnson's late arrival, he is certain to miss at least the first four matches of the season. The 30-year-old Johnson, who previously struggled with back issues while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, spent a long time off the field. His coach, Ryan Harris, recently informed that Johnson's injury is healing and he has started bowling practice.

Johnson previously made headlines in 2024 when he was sold for 10 crore to Gujarat Titans, and last season he was associated with Kolkata Knight Riders. He was unsold in this year's auction but got an opportunity to fill the vacant spot due to injury.

Chennai's fast bowling unit now includes foreign players such as Matt Henry, Jamie Overton, and Jack Fewkes alongside Johnson. Indian bowlers Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, and Mukesh Choudhary will manage Chennai's bowling lineup.
