Nepal Student Union Sets 12th General Convention Dates Amid Internal Delays

Kathmandu. The Nepal Student Union (NSU), long entangled in ad-hocism, has set the dates for its 12th General Convention for Baisakh 20 and 21. NSU President Dujang Sherpa revealed that delays in the convention process were caused by the party leadership failing to provide the statute on time.

He stated that although the current committee received the mandate to hold the convention after the implementation of the 32-year age limit, the party has yet to return the revised statute submitted by them nearly a year ago. According to President Sherpa, if the party had provided the statute promptly, the convention would have been completed before September 8.

He shared that during his tenure, he submitted his resignation to the party leadership five times, but the leadership stopped him, insisting he should "only step down after conducting the convention." He mentioned that he had wanted to step down after the first and second Free Students Union (FSU) elections, but had to continue holding the responsibility at the request of party officials. Under Sherpa's leadership, the NSU successfully established itself in the first position nationwide in the recent FSU elections.

Speaking about internal factionalism and disciplinary issues within the party, Sherpa lamented that he had to struggle for nearly three years just to get a disciplinary committee. He added that the leadership also delayed in providing a mechanism to control rebel candidacies and mutual accusations during elections.

Claiming that the path is now open for students to choose their own leaders and policies in the upcoming convention, he declared that the days of student leaders carrying the bags of party leaders are over. The NSU has put forward a new plan to make the general convention cost-effective and transparent.

Sherpa clarified that funds will be collected voluntarily and transparently from former NSU members scattered across the globe, and no financial assistance will be sought from the party for this purpose.
