Teenager Dies After Jumping From Suspension Bridge in Rukum West Over Alleged Love Affair

Surkhet. A 17-year-old teenager in Rukum West jumped from a suspension bridge, reportedly due to being betrayed in love. Police stated that Mahendra Oli, 17, from Totke, Triveni Rural Municipality-10, jumped from the Barahatakura suspension bridge in the district headquarters, Musikot.

According to Hari Pun, Information Officer at the District Police Office Rukum West, Oli died after jumping from the approximately 200-meter-high suspension bridge around 12 AM last night. However, Pun stated that the police were informed around 3 AM.

“The locals informed us at 3 o’clock, after which our team reached the scene, completed the necessary procedures for the body, and have now sent it to the district hospital for post-mortem,” he told Ratopati.

According to Pun, preliminary investigation suggests that the reason 17-year-old Oli chose the path of death was a romantic relationship. Police also mentioned that Oli’s social media (Facebook) post further supported this suspicion.

In a post made 15 hours earlier, Oli shared a picture with a young woman and mentioned that he was starting to choose the path of death because of her. “First, she showed hope by saying she loved me, and even took me to the temple. She does this to everyone,” he wrote. “Initially, she acted like she loved me, but as time went on, she said she didn't like my habits and behavior.”

In the post, he remembered his parents and elder sister, writing, “Punish her, only then will my soul find peace.”

Police reported that Oli chose death by jumping from the bridge a few hours after making the post.

Police have taken the girl, who allegedly betrayed the teenager, into custody. “The investigation so far indicates that he made the unfortunate decision due to a romantic relationship,” said Pun, the information officer for Rukum West Police.

According to him, the young woman also attempted to jump. “Locals managed to save her,” he said.

Mahendra Oli had moved from Triveni to the district headquarters for his studies. He was a Grade 12 student and had fallen in love with the girl from Aathbiskot.
