Banana Crops in Jhapa Destroyed by Storm After Previous Flood Damage

Jhapa. Banana crops planted on two bighas of land belonging to farmer Kisantra Basnet in Jhapa Rural Municipality-7 have been damaged due to a storm that has been raging for three days.

According to Anju Acharya, Assistant Crop Protection Officer at the Agriculture Knowledge Center Jhapa, the storm completely destroyed the bananas planted on two bighas and two katthas of land. "All the broken plants had bunches of bananas," she said, "The destruction of nearly ripe bananas has caused significant financial loss to the farmer."

According to her, out of the 30 bighas of banana cultivation by farmer Basnet, 3,200 banana plants with bunches were destroyed on two bighas of land. She stated that the destruction of the bananas resulted in a loss of approximately Rs 1.6 million.

Farmer Basnet stated that natural disasters have repeatedly afflicted him. Previously, continuous rain and floods on Ashoj 18 and 19 caused damage to his banana cultivation worth about Rs 10 million.

"I was barely growing new saplings in the area devastated by the flood, and now the storm has wiped them out," Basnet said, "I have not yet received compensation for the previous loss from anywhere, and now there is another loss. It feels like natural disasters only happen to me."
