Rastriya Swatantra Party Candidate Breaks Decades-Long Leftist Stronghold in Makwanpur-2

Makwanpur. A candidate from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has won in Makwanpur Constituency No. 2, which has long been defined as a stronghold of the leftists. Prashant Upreti of the RSP succeeded in breaking this stronghold, which had been held by leftists since 2048 BS.

Makwanpur Constituency No. 2 comprises Raksirang Rural Municipality, Kailash Rural Municipality, Indrasarobar Rural Municipality, Thaha Municipality, Manahari Rural Municipality, Bhimphedi Rural Municipality, Wards 5-8 of Makwanpurgadhi Rural Municipality, and Wards 1, 3, 11, and 19 of Hetauda. Leftist parties had consistently won elections in this constituency, whether for the House of Representatives or the Constituent Assembly.

Specifically, candidates from CPN-UML had been victorious in this area. While CPN-UML candidates had been winning since 2048 BS, a Maoist candidate won the election in 2064 BS.

In 2048 BS, CPN-UML's Bidya Devi Khatiwada won the election. Candidates from CPN-UML were also victorious in 2051 and 2056 BS. In 2064 BS, when Makwanpur was divided into four constituencies, Maoist candidates Prem Bahadur Pulami and Kumari Moktan won in the then Makwanpur-2 and 4, respectively.

In 2070 BS, CPN-UML's Subash Chandra Shahi Thakuri and Rajaram Syangtan won in Makwanpur-2 and 4. After the implementation of the federal structure, CPN-UML's Bidya Devi Khatiwada won in 2074 BS, and CPN-UML's Mahesh Bartaula won in 2079 BS.
