Holi Celebrations Muted in Biratnagar Amid Tightened Security for Upcoming Elections

Biratnagar. Fagu Purnima, the festival of colors, is being celebrated today in various districts of the Terai-Madhesh region, including Biratnagar. Compared to previous years, the enthusiasm and vibrancy of Holi appear significantly subdued on the streets of Biratnagar this time.

The crowds of people and loud DJ music typically seen at the squares of Biratnagar during Holi are missing this year. The streets appear relatively deserted.

The main reason for the subdued Holi atmosphere is the House of Representatives election scheduled for tomorrow. Keeping the election in mind, security arrangements have been tightened in Biratnagar and other border areas.

Considering security sensitivities, the local administration has completely banned playing DJs, creating disturbances, and driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol in public places. Due to the heavy presence of security personnel, unruly behavior and large groups moving together, as seen in the past, are not visible in the market this time.

Another reason for the reduced vibrancy of Holi is the lunar eclipse that occurred yesterday. Due to the eclipse, there was some confusion among the general public about when to celebrate Holi this year. Some celebrated Holi yesterday on the day of the eclipse, while those observing the eclipse restrictions and religious rituals are celebrating by applying colors only today.

Nevertheless, some youths wearing white T-shirts have been seen on the streets applying colors since early Wednesday morning. Children are seen enjoying Holi in their own way, carrying water guns in their hands. There is sporadic presence of people at ice cream and roasted peanut stalls along the roadside, but most shops in the market remain closed.
