Nepali Congress Leaders Deuba and Arzoo Rana Abroad Amidst Upcoming Federal Elections

Kathmandu. As the House of Representatives elections draw near, former Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Congress leader Dr. Arzoo Rana Deuba, are currently out of the country. Arzoo has been visiting neighboring India for the past 5 days, while Deuba departed for Singapore on Wednesday night for a follow-up on his medical treatment.

Deuba, who was seriously injured on Bhadra 24 during an attack by protestors during the Madhes movement in Bhadra, had traveled to Singapore on Kartik 10 for medical treatment. Sources close to him indicated that Deuba, who returned to Nepal on Kartik 28 after 18 days of treatment, has now flown to Singapore again for a follow-up appointment. 

Meanwhile, Deuba's wife, Arzoo, has been on a tour of India for the past 5 days, visiting various temples for worship. A picture of her offering prayers at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, India, has surfaced on social media. Sources close to her informed that she is expected to remain in India for about 5 more days. 

Although there is public discussion that they have flown abroad to evade the elections, sources close to Deuba state that the schedule is set for his return before the elections.  

Gagan Thapa was elected as the President in the special general convention held in Kathmandu from Poush 27 to 30, amidst disagreements between Deuba and leaders close to him. Deuba, Dr. Shekhar Koirala, and their faction have not accepted this special general convention. The dispute over the special general convention is currently under consideration in the Supreme Court. 

Since a case was filed in the Supreme Court arguing that the special general convention was not in accordance with the bylaws, leaders including Deuba had refrained from participating in election campaigning. 

Now, following his departure to Singapore, there is discussion that he is avoiding cooperation.
