Indian PM Modi Calls for AI to Be a Global Public Good, Not Tool of Select Powers

New Delhi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) must become a global public good rather than a tool for a few powerful nations or select multinational corporations. Addressing the Global AI Summit, he stated that the true benefits of AI technology can only be realized by the entire human community if it remains open, accessible, and inclusive.

He noted that the 'democratization' of AI is an imperative necessity today, clarifying that people should not be limited to being mere data points or raw material for AI. Modi argued that AI must serve as an effective medium for inclusion and empowerment, especially for countries in the Global South.

Speaking at the 'AI Impact Summit,' the fourth annual international gathering attended by delegates from around the world to discuss technology, policy, and innovation, he advocated for the equitable distribution of technology. He also proudly recalled the fact that India climbed to third place in the global ranking of AI competitiveness published by Stanford University researchers last year.

However, experts believe that despite ambitious goals for infrastructure development and innovation, India still needs to exert greater effort to compete with technology-leading nations like the US and China. In this context, Modi praised the AI models recently unveiled by Indian companies, claiming that 'models successful in India can be used worldwide.'

He expressed confidence that the younger generation can make AI even safer and more refined only if the core systems of AI are kept open and shared. Prime Minister Modi called upon the global community to resolve to use AI for the universal common good.

Stating that collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence is the main direction for the future, he mentioned that the coming era is one where humans and intelligent systems will co-create, co-work, and co-develop together. His conclusion was that technological development will not displace humans but will elevate them to new heights through collaboration.
