Police Intensify Probe After Driver Arrested for Assaulting Pedestrian in Kathmandu; Warn Against Spreading Misinformation

Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range has intensified its investigation after a vehicle driver who assaulted and harassed a pedestrian at the Narayan Gopal Chowk section of the Ring Road in Kathmandu was arrested.

Police stated that while legal proceedings against the arrested driver are underway, attempts have been made on social media to create various confusions regarding this incident.

According to the police, following the incident, various social media users have been spreading misleading photos, videos, and especially fabricated audiovisual materials generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). These misleading materials have come under police surveillance.

Police clarified that disseminating unverified and society-confusing material regarding a serious ongoing investigation is itself another crime.

Police Superintendent Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, Spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, issued a statement warning that those who spread false information on social media could also come under investigation. The police urged everyone to exercise responsibility and fulfill their human duty while using social media.
