Sri Lanka Boosts Cybersecurity Framework Amid Rising Digital Threats

Colombo. Sri Lanka has initiated a comprehensive plan to further strengthen its cybersecurity framework, taking into account increasing digital risks and technology-related crimes.

The government announced a decision to link all major agencies handling sensitive information and critical government services with a central Cybersecurity Operations Center. This arrangement is expected to enable continuous monitoring of government networks, timely identification of potential risks, and a quick, coordinated response.

According to responsible government officials, various types of unauthorized access attempts, data theft, and system disruption activities targeting government offices, banking systems, and public service providers have been increasing in recent years.

It has been concluded that an integrated and centralized mechanism is now necessary to face such challenges. Under the new arrangement, all sensitive systems will be brought under a single monitoring framework, which will expedite and enhance risk assessment, information sharing, and the implementation of necessary security measures.

The second phase of this plan will gradually incorporate the remaining government departments, semi-government bodies, and institutions related to critical public infrastructure. Additionally, special training programs will be conducted for government employees, providing information on secure digital behavior, protection of confidential data, and methods for identifying potential cyber risks. There are also plans to raise public awareness through civic education programs about safe internet usage.

The government now views cybersecurity not merely as a technological issue but as a critical area directly linked to national security, economic stability, and public trust. This new initiative is expected to make the government service system more secure, reliable, and organized.
