Sophie Devine Stars as Gujarat Giants Secure Third Win in Women's Premier League

Vadodara. A spectacular half-century by Sophie Devine and sharp bowling helped Gujarat Giants register their third victory in the Women's Premier League. Gujarat stunned UP Warriors by 45 runs in the match held at the Cotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Thursday.  

With this win, Gujarat climbed to second place on the points table with three wins from six games, while UP suffered its fourth defeat in its sixth match.

Having lost the toss and been invited to bat first, Gujarat posted a respectable total of 153 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Although Gujarat had a poor start, Sophie Devine anchored the innings responsibly in the middle order. She contributed 50 runs off 42 balls, including two fours and three sixes.  

Opener Beth Mooney supported Devine with 38 runs, but other batters failed to make a significant impact. Danni Wyatt was restricted to 14, while Annabel Sutherland made 14, and captain Ashleigh Gardner scored only 5 runs. For UP, Kranti Godara and Sophie Ecclestone claimed two wickets each.

Chasing a target of 154, UP Warriors were bundled out for just 108 runs in 17.3 overs. UP's start was very disappointing. Opening batter Kiran Navgire was dismissed for zero, and captain Meg Lanning managed only 14 runs.

Phoebe Litchfield offered some hope by scoring 32 runs, but after her dismissal, the UP innings collapsed. Harleen Deol was out for 3, while Chloe Tryon remained unbeaten on 30 but could not save the team from defeat.

In Gujarat's bowling attack, Rajeshwari Gayakwad was lethal, taking 3 wickets. Sophie Devine, who excelled with the bat, and Renuka Singh Thakur shared 2 wickets each, ensuring UP's innings concluded cheaply. Kashvee Gautam and Ashleigh Gardner also chipped in with one wicket apiece.
