Thailand confirms 1st civilian killed in week of border clashes: health ministry

Thailand's health ministry told AFP a civilian had been killed Sunday during border clashes with Cambodia, the country's first non-military death since the long-standing conflict reignited in fighting this month.

Health ministry spokesman Ekachai Piensriwatchara confirmed to AFP that the civilian killed in Sisaket province was the first recorded in Thailand since the fresh fighting began on December 7.

The Thai army said in a statement that the 63-year-old man died from shrapnel after Cambodian forces fired rockets into a civilian area.
