Nationwide Strikes and Protests in France Over Budget Cuts
Major trade unions in France have called for widespread strikes and street protests to oppose new budget cuts. This action comes as the new Prime Minister, Sebastian Lecornu, is in discussions with political parties about controlling the country's large deficit and debt. The unions are demanding that Lecornu withdraw the budget draft proposed by the previous government.
Unions Oppose Welfare Cuts and Austerity Measures
The unions have warned that the proposed plan, which includes pausing social welfare programs and other austerity measures, will reduce the purchasing power of low and middle-income workers. In a joint statement released last week, the unions labeled these measures as "unprecedented cruelty." They accused the government of making workers, temporary employees, retirees, and the sick pay the price for its economic policies. The unions have also consistently rejected President Emmanuel Macron's pension reform, which raised the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64.
Heavy Security and Warnings of Disruption
The former Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, stated that a "very strong police operation" would be in place on Thursday. He reported that nearly 80,000 police and gendarmerie officers would be deployed across the country. Retailleau also gave an early warning about expected blockades, vandalism, and potential violent activity from far-left groups. He further indicated that protests would continue in many French cities the following day.
Widespread Transport and Service Disruptions Expected
Significant disruption is anticipated in many areas, including public transport, hospitals, and schools. The French national rail company, SNCF, expects "some disruption" to its high-speed trains serving France and Europe, but stated that most will run. However, regional rail lines, the Paris Metro, and commuter trains are expected to be heavily affected. Air travel will see limited disruption after a major controllers' union postponed its strike until the new cabinet is formed.
Recap of Last Week's Tense Protests
Last week's protests saw tension flare in the streets with smoke, fire, blockades, and tear gas. Although the goal of a complete blockade was not fully achieved, the "Block Everything" campaign successfully disrupted many parts of daily life and sparked tensions in hundreds of locations, according to officials.
