Nepal Imports Rice Worth NPR 20.35 Billion from India

Kathmandu – Nepal imported rice worth NPR 20.35 billion from India in the last fiscal year (2081/82). According to customs data, the country brought in 531,144 metric tons of rice from India.

The government collected NPR 1.52 billion in customs revenue from these rice imports. In contrast, Nepal imported only 10 kg of rice (worth NPR 2,000) from China during the same period.

Domestic Rice Production Affected by Floods and Drought

Despite an increase in rice cultivation last year, severe floods and landslides on Asoj 11 and 12 (late September) caused significant damage, preventing expected growth in production.

This year, the ongoing drought during the monsoon season is also likely to negatively impact rice yields.
