Netflix Debuts AI-Generated Visual Effects in Original Series
Netflix has revealed it used generative artificial intelligence (AI) to create visual effects for the first time in one of its original shows. The technology was employed to produce a building collapse scene in the Argentine sci-fi series The Eternauts, as disclosed by co-CEO Ted Sarandos.
AI as a Creative Tool, Not Just a Cost-Cutter
Sarandos emphasized that AI presents an "incredible opportunity to enhance storytelling," not just reduce production costs. In The Eternauts, generative AI allowed the team to complete a complex scene 10 times faster than with traditional methods, making high-end effects feasible for mid-budget productions. "The cost would have been prohibitive otherwise," he noted.
Controversy and Industry Concerns
The use of AI in entertainment remains contentious, with fears it could displace human artists. The issue fueled Hollywood’s 2023 strikes, where unions like SAG-AFTRA demanded stricter AI regulations to protect jobs and creative rights.
Strong Financial Performance
Netflix’s announcement coincided with its Q2 earnings report, showing $11.08 billion in revenue (up 16% year-over-year). Hits like Squid Game: Season 3 (122 million views) drove growth. Sarandos framed AI as a tool to democratize effects for smaller projects while maintaining creative integrity.
Looking Ahead:
While Netflix celebrates AI’s debut, the debate over its role in filmmaking continues. The company insists it’s a collaborator, not a replacement—but the industry watches closely.
