Teachers’ Federation to Continue Protests Amid Lack of Government Assurance

April 17, Kathmandu — The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has announced that it will continue its ongoing protest movement, citing the government’s failure to provide a reliable assurance regarding the enactment of the Education Act.
During a meeting held today, the Federation decided to further organize and intensify its protest activities. Federation Vice Chairperson Nanu Maya Parajuli stated, “We were seeking certainty about the enactment of the Act. We had hoped for a credible commitment from the government, but that did not happen. The government does not seem to be taking the protest seriously.”
Although the government has called the summer session of Parliament for Baisakh 12, conflicting remarks from Speaker Devraj Ghimire have further eroded the Federation’s trust.
“The Speaker has said the Education Bill might not be tabled during this session. The session could have been convened earlier, around Baisakh 6 or 7. This delay reflects the government’s lack of responsibility,” Parajuli added.
She also noted that while the Ministry is prepared to address teachers’ service-related issues through a Cabinet decision, the government has attached preconditions, which the Federation cannot accept.
“The Ministry is ready, but a condition was set — we must withdraw the protest first. We cannot agree to that,” said Parajuli. “The Cabinet decision should come without conditions. If that happens, we may reconsider the modality of our movement.”
Teachers have complained that the government is attempting to send them home empty-handed. “Now, even more teachers from all 77 districts will be coming to Kathmandu. No one will remain in the schools. The government will not be able to manage the situation,” Parajuli warned.
It has been 16 days since teachers launched their protest in Kathmandu, but no agreement has been reached so far.
